Week in Germany

Me and four friends (Katie, Kara, John, and Nick) spent the last week in Germany. We hit up 4 cities in 6 days, so basically we were in each city for 36 hours. We did touristy stuff during the days and went out at night, so we got the best of both worlds and had a blast. We flew into Frankfurt then rented a car the next day to drive to Munich.

This is a photo of Nick driving our Ford Fiesta. Yeah for the Audobon! In Munich, we toured the city and saw the famous Glockenspiel (cuckoo clock). The history of the plague, Bavarian food and beer, and Hitler and his party were really interesting. We also took the train 20 minutes outside the city and visited Dachau concentration camp. I had been there before when I was 16, but it was just as humbling as the first time. I only wish we had more time there. These are some photos of Munich:

From Munich, we took an overnight train to Berlin, which was my favorite city (Munich was a close second). I wish we could have spent more time in Berlin. There is so much art, culture and history there! The history (Hitler's death, Berlin wall, etc) is so new, the differences between East and West Berlin are still very visible, as is the impact of the Hitler regime. Berlin is definetely a city I could live in someday. We also did a pub crawl that night. We went to 4 pubs and one club. Our guides carried bottles of vodka/orange juice in their backpacks and we drank on the trains and streets in between the pubs--this is legal pretty much everywhere in Europe. It was a crazy time, and definetely one of the highlights of my trip...especially watching a dozen Scottish boys sing drinking songs on the train!

We took a bus to Hamburg, a port city in northern Germany. It's also Germany's self-proclaimed "city of lust," so the nightlife was a little crazy. Prostitution is legal, and there are about 400 licensed prostitutes all lined up on a famous street called Reeperbahn. Needless to say, the nightlife was pretty crazy in Hamburg. It was also a really pretty city, very old. It's the richest city in Germany due to the many millionaires that live there.

Finally, we took an overnight bus back to Frankfurt to fly out Sunday. We got back to our apartment around 8 p.m. Sunday night, exhausted and dirty, since we only brought our backpacks to Germany. It was a whirlwind tour of Germany, and absolutely amazing! If you'd like a postcard of Germany, or of Spain and my future trips, send me your address and I will be sure to mail you something!

Cheers,
Hannah
